Legionella is a rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the genus L.pneumophilia. It occurs naturally in soil and wet environments, flourishing when the temperature is between 20 and 50 degrees Celsius, particularly where there is little or no water movement. When contaminated water is inhaled it can cause Legionnaire’s disease, a potentially fatal form of pneumonia.
